Roermond is a small city in the Netherlands known for its designer shopping outlet. It is one of my favourite places to stop for lunch on weekends when we go to the market or if I am passing by on my way to somewhere else. It has several beautiful churches and many charming restaurants with patios in the square. My favourite place in Roermond is the old cemetery where you can find the graves of Colonel van Gorcum and his wife, Lady Aefferden. The couple were not allowed to be buried together because one was a Protestant and the other Catholic. They were buried in separate sections of the cemetery but still lie next to each other. Hands read out from the backs of their headstones to grasp over the wall that separates them.
